The main problem for training people like us is that there isn’t a lot of practice available for the scenarios that we are actually likely to encounter, so it was good to be able to practice something at the right scale for us.
In the past I have practiced closing off a whole estuary, I have studied and written about a major spill in a large industrial scale port and I have received training for a minor spill and clear up. This is the first time that I have deployed a single boom around a single fishing boat and seen the effort required and the kit needed.
The training really does help to fix in the mind exactly what we are realistically likely to need, and gives us somewhere to start when planning what we will have to do next.
I seem to keep on saying this or something similar job after job with Briggs but I'm glad I can; on this ocassion that the work of the 'gang' on the Atlas, more than ably led by Mark James, was exemplary.
In often not very pleasant conditions they stuck to their tasks with no slackening of effort despite the difficulties presented, and it was their efforts which guaranteed the success of this project.
Of course we must not forget the Forth Hunter which always ably supports as and when required.

I am writing to you to convey my admiration and thanks to the Master and crew of the MV Forth Constructor. Today we had a full gale blow through resulting in numerous vessels breaking free from their moorings and going ashore.
The RNLI are not able to assist in these circumstances as there is no threat to life; however it is heart breaking for us to watch both pleasure and commercial craft in such dire straits.
This afternoon I watched the Forth Constructor capture the fishing vessel Jean Francis that had broken her moorings and drifted across Oban Bay. Your crew took her in alongside tow and berthed her at the South Pier in very difficult conditions. I was very pleased to catch the ropes when they berthed the Jean Francis. In my opinion the crew demonstrated an exceptional level of seamanship and the Master first-class ship handling.
I feel that they approached the task with a great deal of professionalism and that they acted in the very best traditions of the maritime world.
